Secure connection failed
Yesterday morning, I started receiving a "secure connection failed" message when trying to retrieve email from imap.gmail.com. I searched Mozilla Support and tried the following, which apparently worked for others:
"First, delete all entries in Tools/Options/Security/Passwords/Saved Passwords. Press Alt if the Menu Bar with Tools is hidden, or click the 3-bar icon, Options/Options/Security/Passwords/Saved Passwords.
Next, use these settings for IMAP accounts: imap.gmail.com on port 993, SSL/TLS, OAuth2 authentication, User Name = email address. For POP accounts: pop.gmail.com on port 995, SSL/TLS, OAuth2 authentication, User Name = email address. For SMTP: smtp.gmail.com on port 465, SSL/TLS, OAuth2 authentication, User Name = email address.
After you've deleted the passwords, restart TB and enter the regular account password, not an app password, in the OAuth browser window when prompted."
It doesn't work for me...I keep getting error messages. Suggestions? Thanks!!

I keep getting error messages.
What error exactly?
Like this:
What happens when you click on the 'add an exception' link? Note, you're not supposed to actually create an exception. The idea is to just get to a point where you can inspect the cert.
Also, what is your anti-virus/security software?
When I click "create an exception", nothing happens. At all. Screenshot of my Windows Security:
Please post your Troubleshooting Information. At the top right of the Thunderbird window, click the menu button , then select Help > Troubleshooting Information. Press the "Copy text to clipboard button" and paste the information into your reply.

Your email account settings look good, and it's highly unlikely that anti-virus is interfering with your secure connection to the server. Are you certain this error is related to email? What happens if you close the error? Can you still get mail? Is it possible the error is generated by a Google Calendar?
I've restarted TBird and the PC itself numerous times since yesterday - always the same. I don't use Google Calendar. Any other way Google may have caused this? It just came out of the blue yesterday morning.
Do you have a VPN? If so, is there still a problem if you turn it off?
No VPN. In fact I had to Google it to find out what it is! :)
Do you accept cookies in TB Options/Privacy & Security? That's necessary for OAuth authentication to complete, although a different error message is usually presented. As a test, try adding the account to a new profile from Help/Troubleshooting, about:profiles. The original profile is not affected.
I tried this, and this time I got a different error. It doesn't seem to "know" that telus.net is now using gmail. Would this make a difference?
The correct settings for Telus are: imap.gmail.com on 993, SSL/TLS, OAuth2, smtp.gmail.com on 465, SSL/TLS, or 587, STARTTLS; OAuth2. User Name for both is yourname@telus.net. You might have to use Manual config. when adding the account, as the TB database is obviously out of date (Telus has used gmail for several months).

Has a bug been filed to update the database do you know?
OK, I tried that, and here's the latest error message. Did I mess it up by creating a new password for this profile?
Bit of an experiment here but try going here https://myaccount.google.com/lesssecureapps and turning on less secure apps. While it should be kicking off an oAuth sign in attempt, it might be still trying with a normal password and that setting will allow it to succeed.
If that does work I would ask you to document the exact steps I would need to replicate your failure.

Did you confirm the new password by logging in on the gmail website?
If you use OAuth2 with the correct password, the 'less-secure apps' and two-factor verification settings are irrelevant.
The new password did NOT work when I tried to log into gmail. The original password did work. But when I did your new profile exercise again, with the original password, I still got the error message.
Fixed. Here's what happened. I had my webmistress go into my computer remotely. She clicked on the "Create an Exception" button and, like me, had no visible result. She then closed the error window (which I hadn't done when I selected that option before) and suddenly the Authentication worked! Hopefully one of the TB techs can fix this bug so that the re-authentication process can work without having to accidentally stumble on it. :)
I did the same thing which makes the Secure Connection Failed pop-up message go away but after a while it comes back and I have to close the pop-up again. This error message only started appearing when I installed TB on my new Windows 11 laptop. My other PC's run Windows 10 and do not get the error message.
