I got this new Chromebook, and now I'm having issues using YouTube. When I select a video to watch, a message pops up at the top saying "To play video, you may need to install the required video codecs." I am able to watch the video I selected anyhow, with some minor issues with the picture and its frames I believe, however, when I try to watch a different video, it does not work. Sometimes it will play for a short bit, but will then stop, and start buffering. When I then refresh the page, the video will not play and will only buffer. I am not sure what to do, and if this is an issue with the browser, or the device itself, please help?

Firefox browser shouldn't need codec to play youtube video. What version of Firefox are you using?

I think you are running an 11-month-old release. Can you update? See: Update Firefox to the latest release.

If Chromebook doesn't have an update, hmm, that's inconvenient.

As a background note, Firefox expects certain system-level packages to be present to decode patented video CODECs. However, as a Windows person, I can't really help with what you need for Linux, much less ChromeOS.

Make sure you have the latest FFmpeg and libavcodec packages installed on Linux to full support the HTML5 players.

Though technically you should still be able to play older videos on Youtube, you just may not be able to play YT live streams or recently uploaded YT videos though if you do not have these packages installed on Linux.

You do if you are using Linux (FFmpeg and libavcodec) to fully support HTML5 players and you do need codecs installed on Windows by way of media feature packs if you have N or KN edition of Windows https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/fix-video-audio-problems-firefox-windows
