I have Firefox 3.6.3 it is very slow to start how can I fix this using Windows XP pro

Firefox is very slow to load from a cold start. I am using ver 3.6.3 and when I click the update buttons no updates are found. This is very painful to wait for the start up. Once Firefox has been started all works fine. I am using Windows XP Pro latest service pack.
