I've managed to upgrade the flash player now, but I'm afraid to admit I had to use IE to do it.

Are you sure that Flash for Firefox has been updated?

IE uses a different version of Flash (ActiveX) than other browsers (Firefox, Chrome, Safari, and others) use (the Plugin version). By using IE you may have only updated the IE - ActiveX version of Flash.

In Firefox, view Tools > Options > Plugins and see which version of Flash is shown - Flash 10.1 r82 is the latest.

Tools>add-ons>plugins shows Flash 10.1r85

I think the problem may have been with the Adobe download manager, which once installed via IE allowed me to download the flash player in both browsers.

Thanks for the reply anyway.

Flash 10.1r85 was just released this afternoon. So you are up-to-date for Flash.
Note that IE uses a different version of Flash (ActiveX version) than most other browsers. You can use IE to go to the "Check your plugin versions" link below to verify your IE version.

  1. Check your plugin versions: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/
    • Note: plugin check page does not have information on all plugin versions
  2. Update Java:
