Google preferences cookie is not being placed on my computer
I want to have Google preferences set to 100 results per page. The default is 10 results. I use Google advanced search all the time. I have no problem with this using Opera and IE. I've been a Firefox user since versions prior to 1.0 so I know the software well. When I set the preference 10 100 results and click 'save preferences', I'm informed that my preferences are saved and returns me to advanced seach with 10 results per page. There is no Google preferences stored on my computer no matter many times I 'save' my preferences. This is VERY frustrating and seems to occur every time there is an update to Firefox. This is the only CONSTANT irritation with Firefox. Today I removed Firefox 3.6.12, downloaded 3.6.12 then reinstalled it. Same problem. HELP!!!

Google recently made some changes to the Google search site with the addition of Instant search and that made the setting of the number of results in the Google settings to stop working.
There is a link directly to the right of the Google search field on the Google results page.
That is a button with a drop down list: Instant is On/Off.
If Instant search is enabled on the Google Search settings page (link at the top right) then you only get 10 results.
You have to disable instant search and reload the result page and then set the number of results to your preferred choice.
It may not work if you make both changes at the same time.
Thank you so much for this. It works, and it's been driving me mad for weeks. I thought it was a Google plot to make us see ten times more ads!
Super job! Thanks for your help. ded321
