can search from upper left search and address bar. Can not activate search from bar in screen middle with the search selector at the end. Always has worked before. Everything else is normal, including address bar, favorites, saved sites.

Try to use the SearchReset extension to reset some preferences to the default values.

Note that the SearchReset extension only runs once and then uninstalls automatically, so it won't show on the "Firefox > Add-ons" page (about:addons).
