For some reason TB quit working with gmail. It goes to the site, says there is 88 messages then goes to next email. I have unread messages in gmail. I set gmail to delete messages when they are downloaded from server and that does not happen either.

If you go to mail.google.com can you read your mail there? Are you using IMAP or POP? Have make any changes about the time TB quit working? Look at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/thunderbird-and-gmail

It seems the problem is Gmail has changed the screen setup. It has introduced tabs to the inbox and this confuses TB. Just go into gmail settings and turn off the tabs to the inbox. Then delete and mail that is older then this year. Then set POP to remove ALL messages after downloading. Then turn off READ to remaining messages and turn back on. Now it should work just fine.
