Greetings:

My Thunderbird (38.3.0) has considerable delays in delivering eMails from the configured server. I often realize that I've not received expected eMails and will either restart Thunderbird or take it off-line, switch to the local Sent folder, put it back on-line, switch back to the local Inbox, and check for messages. Both of these processes quite often will almost immediately deliver several eMails with a timestamp up to several hours old. You might want to blame this on just a crappy route from server to Thunderbird client or anti-virus scanning or something else like that. However, let me explain why I won't buy that explanation.

Two days a week I work remotely to my PC on a laptop with Thunderbird installed as a client (pretty much identical installation) and connect from a virtual machine on the laptop, through a VPN, to my desktop (remote desktop). My laptop's Thunderbird will notify me of eMails received on the same account, server configured identically, almost immediately when comparing the timestamp on the eMail with the time on the laptop. If I then go to my remote desktop and 'nudge' Thunderbird, as discussed above, that Thunderbird receives the same eMails. Puzzling, and at the same time extremely irritating to not be receiving my eMails on a timely basis on the desktop machine.

Both desktop and laptop are running Windows 7 Professional (64-bit). Both are using the latest version of Thunderbird. I've compared the account settings several times looking for differences to help explain this.

The eMail server uses only IMAP so that's my only choice. I have a Filter set up on the IMAP server's Inbox (on the desktop) to move all eMails to the Inbox of the local folder when 'Gettiing New Mail', so my eMails are never stored on the IMAP server and I never have quota issues.

This issue has been occurring consistently for at least a couple of years now, so it's not something related to the newer versions of Thunderbird.

I've even setup other machines to temporarily act as my Thunderbird client. All perform as I would expect with the exception of my regular desktop PC.

Any suggestions on how to resolve this?

Thanks!

Just a bit more info; Do you compact your folders regularly? Your antivirus what kind, what version and how is it set up towards mail Who is your mailserver provider? Any Add-on?

Open Tools / Error Console, ( Ctrl+Shift+J ), Clear and Close console Try "Get messages" Open Error Console again and tell what kind of error you get.

more options

Compacting is set to run automatically whenever it will save more than 1MB of space.

AntiVirus is McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.8.0. The On-Delivery Email Scanner is disabled.

Mail server provider is from Corporate (all I can find out is that the server provides IMAP).

When I open the Error Console, it's got a bunch of messages. After clearing and closing, when I click on "Get Messages", it shows no errors, only informational messages (I find no method for copying or saving the output of the console).

Thanks!

I took out some of the spacing and then a bunch of the printer lines to get it to fit in the box's character limitation

Can you write a cmd -file? You can monitor all IMAP-traffic with a simple script, But its a lot of information and if you have many mails to sync your result-file will be big.

Filename example: Make_IMAP_log.cmd

   set NSPR_LOG_MODULES=imap:5
   set NSPR_LOG_FILE=%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\imap.log
   "%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe"

Save this somewhere and run it. It's a cmd-file that will open a DOS-window, set those variables and run Thunderbird from there. Your logfile is on desktop and called imap.log. It opens in notepad or similar.

Close Tbird very soon. Those settings will not stay and you can run T-bird as usual. (If needed run the cmd-file again)

You could first try to run T-bird in safe mode (help / restart with ......) (You prob have to turn "Oracle Beehive Extensions" on)

Command file created. I ran the script and allowed Thunderbird to go about it's normal startup. There were no new eMails to download as I'd already done this before noticing your update. I closed down Thunderbird and would attach the log file, but this system won't allow that, so will post it here. I should point out that it never has a problem when first starting Thunderbird, only after it's been open for a while. Should I run the script again and leave it running until I observer the issue and have subsequently 'nugded' it to get the new eMails? (kinda makes sense, huh?)

Your right, I couldn't find any downloads. To me this looked ordinary. What you want to catch is some misbehaving or errors.

Please edit your post and delete all of your log-file, as it contains your email-address.

Just so we haven't jumped to far. Is your account setup to download at startup and every x minutes? (account settings / server settings)

Good catch on the personal/company data, thanks!!

Yes, it checks for new messages at startup and every 1 minute. I thought that IMAP basically ignored these settings anyway.

Thanks!

Can you advise on what to search for in the logs to see if it's throwing errors?

Just had the issue occur. Once I finished 'nudging' Thunderbird to actually get the eMail, I closed Thunderbird. So, the information you're after should be close to the end of the file.

I then cleaned the imap.log file, it's 10MB, zipped it tight, and am eMailing it to you.

Thanks!

I'm not as good as I thought. Cant find anything but a few wait and consequently "failed creating protocol instance....". No error Big image thou.

Any other ideas/suggestions?

Thanks!
