After upgrade to 55.0.3 I can no longer download .acsm.

1 This problem is only occuring on 1 site. (EBSCO). I checked if I could download .acsm file type from other sites e.g. proquest, and all good. no issue observed.

2 No error message is returned. I just donot recieve the .acsm file even though I have clicked download.

3 If I use safari I can download the .acsm from ebsco site, no issue. (This is how I borrowed the ebook today I needed.)

4 before upgrade to 55.0.3, I downloaded .acsm from ebsco site with no issue.

FYI: .acsm file type is the Adobe Digital Editions file that allows you to read the ebook in ADE.

What has changed that would be stopping this? The files are very tiny. Any ideas?

thankyou for your help.

Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration in Firefox. Since this feature was added to Firefox it has gradually improved but there are still a few glitches.

You will need to restart Firefox for this to take effect so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.,) and then perform these steps:

In Firefox 54 and below:

  1. Click the menu button New Fx Menu and select Options (Windows) or Preferences (Mac, Linux).
  2. Select the Advanced panel and the General tab.
  3. Uncheck Use hardware acceleration when available.
  4. Close Firefox completely and then restart Firefox to see if the problem persists.

In Firefox 55 and above:

  1. Click the menu button New Fx Menu and select Options (Windows) or Preferences (Mac, Linux).
  2. Select the General panel.
  3. Under Performance, uncheck Use recommended performance settings. Additional settings will be displayed.

  4. Uncheck Use hardware acceleration when available.
  5. Close Firefox completely and then restart Firefox to see if the problem persists.

What happens if you try to download this file?

Can't you right-click a link and use "Save Link as" to save the file?

If the servers send the file as text/plain then Firefox will open the file in a Firefox tab.

With what content type does the server send this file if you open a link in a new tab? You can check that in "Tools -> Page Info -> General" and in the Network Monitor.

Hello corel. ebsco download of .acsm file is in their "download popup". right click does not work (it is not designed that way). No ability to force it to go to a new tab. Tried many times. You must click the download button.

What is observed

  • no error message is observed
  • I do not receive an .acsm file
  • All looks normal, I can see its working (little circle goes over the tab). But no .acsm

Normally you click the download button, and it processes, and the .acsm file downloads automatically. This normal behaviour I observed BEFORE upgrade to Firefox 55. This normal behaviour I observed in Safari.

  • cache has been cleared
  • cookies has been cleared. I do not save cookies for this site or the other sites that use this .acsm file
  • hardware acceleration is OFF. always has been
  • error occurs in safe-mode
  • right click on download button is not possible. download button is in a popup and right click/force open in link in new tab is not available.

I could do this regular and simple action many many many times in Firefox before upgrade to 55. I can do it in safari

Things like this do not encourage a user to upgrade if they wish to stay using Firefox.

Can you post a link to a publicly accessible page (i.e. no authentication or signing on required)?

the page is authenticated e.g. it is borrowing an ebook from my library
