mosilla firefox doesn,t open. tried to install the new ff and it said I must turn off the FF running. help!!

I received a message that my sbcglobal account needed up dating. Asked to change password...did. I still can't get on using firefox 

tried to install the new FireF but it said that it couldn't in I stopped running the current FF.  I don't know how.

Did you remove all previous FF and delete the Mozilla folder before installing a new FF?
