Thunderbird is software installed on your computer, so it does not connect to your computer. It is already there and I assume running.

Perhaps you could tell us what exactly is happening, including any error messages you receive. We (the volunteers on this forum) know exactly what you tell us and what we read between the lines of what you tell us. So far I think we are aware you have some sort of connection problem. But that is really something of a guess.
