If I type only "facebook" or "firefox" in the address bar on FF8, why it does not redirects directly to the obvious page ("www.facebook.com", "www.firefox.com") like it did in FF3.6?

Normally, in Firefox 3.6 I could write almost any word related to an address of *.com, ex. "narutoget", "facebook", "myspace", "hotmail", etc., and it would redirect me to the respective page of that word, "www.facebook.com", "www.hotmail.com", etc. That is, FF first searched in Google, and then redirects to the page. I know this because in the status bar I could see first looking in google.com, and then redirecting to the page. If a default page wasn't found, then it would take me directly to google search. I just installed Firefox 8, and this does not happens. What happens is that any word would go directly to google search.

I want to know why FF8 does not do just like FF3.6 respecting to this feature. Is there a way I could get this feature in FF8 changing/adding values in about:config?

I just find annoying that before I could go directly to some pages, but now I have to make an additional click, which is making an additional waste of time.

You can modify the pref keyword.URL on the about:config page to use Google's "I'm Feeling Lucky" or Google's "Browse By Name".

To open the about:config page, type about:config in the location (address) bar and press the "Enter" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.

  • Use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a preference more easily.
  • Preferences that have been modified show as bold (user set).
  • Preferences can be reset to the default via the right-click context menu if they are user set
  • Preferences can be changed via the right-click context menu: Modify (String or Integer) or Toggle (Boolean)
