This problem happened sporadically after 8.0.1, and consistently after the 9.0.1 update. I have not changed my font settings in preferences. Have tried viewing the same sites in other browsers (Safari and Chrome) and the pages are displayed properly.

I work on a iMac with a quadcore i7 processor and MacOS 10.6.8

Thanks, cor-el. That seems to have worked. I ran Font Doctor and deleted the FontBook plist. So far, so good. Was hoping to avoid reloading the system and this was very helpful.
