I have issues when using CCleaner (which I use instead of disk cleanup). The program gives me an error message saying the program is still running when I have closed all windows. This prevents the internet cache from being cleaned which slows down my browsing due to lack of memory space (I think, I'm not that tech savvy).

So I have resorted to uninstalling the program, running the cleaner and then reinstalling. It's annoying.

If this continues, close Firefox via File>Exit. Don't rush. Then if you get the same message from CC, open the Task Manager(right click on taskbar) and close Firefox.exe which should be listed under Processes.

CCleaner should then work.

You can use Clear Recent History in Firefox to clear the cache when you close Firefox.

  • Tools > Options > Privacy : History: [X] Clear history when Firefox closes > Settings

cor-el's is the better answer and deserves the solution. It is hard to imagine that you are having memory problems with Windows 7.

I use CCleaner myself, carefully, and it is good for a tidy up but it would rarely make any significant difference to browser performance. If you are loading your computer to that extent you need more memory.

After you close or exit the Firefox. The open Task Manager and see if there is still process of firefox.exe still running. Usually after 2 or 3 seconds the process end. If not then check for plugin-container.exe is still running. Better try to update the plugins also. Also you can go for automatic cleaning of your Firefox as cor-el has suggested.
