I cannot print .pdf files from within thunderbird. Also, how do I have attachmetns show at the top of an e-mail?
I can do File->Print, or click the print button in the upper bar, but it doesn't do anything. I can open in adobe reader from thunderbird and then print, but not from the application itself. Is there an add-on/config tweak/workaround to do this?
And while I'm asking, all of my previous e-mail clients showed the attachments at the top when opening an e-mail. Not only am I used to it, but in a business setting I want to be able to in a split second know if I should address the attachment paperwork or the body of the e-mail. It is fairly inconvenient to have to scroll down to the bottom of a message that I only have to take a glance at and not respond to.
Does anyone know any way to make these changes in thunderbird?

File->Print will refer to emails and if 'View' > 'display attachments inline' is selected, it will also print images and text documents.
But I'm not aware of the ability to print other word processing software documents. You have to open an attachment in order to print it from the correct software.
