Can I set Thunderbird star feature as not (un-) starred as the default?

Most of my emails are not that important, so I would rather have the option to mark them starred rather than each day have to click on the yellow star to mark them as unimportant, and just leave a few starred as important. I would save hours of my time over a year if I could just click on the ones that I decide are important emails to mark with a yellow star. Surprisingly, I could not find a way to do this in either tools or options menus. David.

... if I could just click on the ones that I decide are important emails to mark with a yellow star.

That's the way it works. Are you saying all messages get stared automatically in your case?

Yes, that's correct. From the very beginning when I first started using Thunderbird and versions since, the programme marks all my incoming emails as starred with solid yellow star. I want to have the default be unstarred not starred. David.

Try to start Thunderbird in safe mode.

Thanks for this suggestion. I tried this, however, it mahe no difference. I repeated the procedure 3 more times to make sure I was doing it correctly and had Thunderbird in Safe Mode with no add-on. (I don't use add-ons anyway.) David.

What is your account type - POP or IMAP?

IMAP, because I want to download from the server. David

Just to be clear, are you talking about the star to the left of the message header in the Inbox or to the right of the senders name or address when viewing the message in the message pane or a tab?

I'd suggest to create a new profile using profile manager.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/using-multiple-profiles

Then start Thunderbird with the new profile also via profile manager. Set-up your existing IMAP account in the new profile. You may want to disable synchronization and indexing for the account for the time being, as this may take a while.
