When I go to a particular website and enter my name and password i do not the password reminder (I get a grey locked padlock icon on the address bar). I do get it for all other sites. I raised this with the site hosts and they say the issue is with my browser.

A password reminder is often normally sent by email. If Firefox is involved that probably indicates you are using some type of Webmail.

Many things can affect whether you see emails

  • Spam filters and email settings
    • Have you looked in your email's junk box ?
    • Have you checked with your Webmail's support documentation or help site.
  • Security software

Hi John99, Thank you for responding. What I am referring to the Password Reminder pop up that comes up when you enter a user name and password.

I am not sure when you are expecting this.

Does it work for you normally ? If you have a site with a single password and single username, and have already stored the password then if you log of and close the tab then later try to reopen it the username and password should be entered for you automatically. If you are using a master password you will be prompted to enter that first. If you have site that rotates passwords or has more than one username you may have problems. Does that work for you ok on this forum ?

See Password manager - Remember, delete, change and import saved passwords in Firefox Try out with this forum, delete the saved password and login again. It should offer to save your password does it ?

If it woks on this forum but not on the other site maybe it is a problem with the site. Have you tried the site in question with an alternative browse ?

Some sites especially security conscious ones such as webmail or banks may in fact attempt to prevent the password being saved. (There is a workaround that sometimes works)

Hi John99, Thank you for your attention to my problem. Yes, the password reminder does work normally with other sites. My problem is that it is not working with a particular site that I use a lot at work. As you suggest I have tried it with other browsers, Chrome and IE and with the problem website it does not work with them either. They claim they have carried out tests and it is not their problem. What I was hoping to get out this was an understanding of how the Password Reminder works so I can actually prove it is not me or my PC or my LAN but their site is the issue.,

I was wondering if it was the sites use of autocomplete-off but that changes with Fx30 (already changed in pre-release) and already differs in some other browsers and you continue to have the problem with other browsers.

I need to be clear exactly what you do and see. It would also help to know what the site is, although unless it is public and free it probably can not be tested by others, but it does at least enable a search to be made for reports of the problem.

Can you list exactly the steps you take and what you expect to see or happen compared with what does or does not happen.

If this does hinge on how a particular individual site behaves it is not actually a Firefox problem and although someone may provide an answer it may be better asking somewhere else such as

Have you ruled out that other security related software could be interfering, and if this is a problem at work have you asked your IT department.

Hi John99, I do not think it is a Firefox issue but as I say, if I can understand how the Password Faciltiy works then maybe I can pass the problem back to the provider. As for your request of what I see and do: To start from a clean slate I have removed all saved passwords. First of all I use facebook login as a test. I go to the login page and enter my user and PW. On clicking 'login' on the top left hand corner of the screen I get the pop up 'Would you like to remember the password etc'. This is what I always expect and I want from the problem site. So, I now go to my problem site, which is; https://www.portal-administration.unlimitedhorizon.co.uk/webapp/signin I enter my user and PW (for your test you can enter anything) and I do not get the pop up. I have looked at the source code and as you say autocomplete is off, but it is also off on Facebook so I don't think that is the 'smoking gun' I'm looking for.

If you look at the page code then you see that the form has autocomplete="off" and that is what is preventing Firefox from saving the name and password.

<form autocomplete="off" id="id3" method="post" action="signin?wicket:interface=:0:wrap:inner:signInPanel:signInForm::IFormSubmitListener::"><div style="width:0px;height:0px;position:absolute;left:-100px;top:-100px;overflow:hidden">

In Firefox 30 the autocomplete="off" check is disabled by default and in the Firefox 29 release you can toggle the signon.overrideAutocomplete pref to true on the about:config page to make Firefox ask to store the name and password.

Hi, Thank you for the response. Sorry to ask but tell me where I access the about:config page and any advice I may need to make this change?

Works for me in Fx 31.0a2 (2014-06-08) with scripts and cookies allowed. I attach a screenshot of the dropdown reminder.

However Fx29.0.1 NOT working, I did not initially get a properly rendered page only partial display the login box was entirely absent other than a few words. Firefox's safemode did not help, but a new clean profile displays the page ok. Even after setting up a master password in the temporary profile no drop down reminder instead though I note the login box then generates a blue triangle and message that login has failed. So possibly I can not test without actually saving a valid password.

I did not try with a bookmarklet, that may be used to defeat autocomplete

but Fx30 is released anytime now so it will not be needed.

(I probably will not be on the forum again until tomorrow )
