I have 2 laptops runing Firefox 30 in a Linux/Ubuntu setup. In one, all live streaming from webcams functions perfectly. In the other many webcams are grey'd out with the meassage "Video format or MIME not supported" or there is simply a blank area on the page. I have read info on the forums abouit refreshing the screen/page but this either does not or happen or has no effect..!? Baffled as to why the behaviour of two near identicalmachines should be different.

Did you post this from the bad computer?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} While you are in safe mode; Press the <Alt> or <F10> key to bring up the tool bar. Followed by;

Windows; Tools > Options Linux; Edit > Preferences Mac; application name > Preferences

Then Advanced > General. Look for and turn off Use Hardware Acceleration.

Poke around safe web sites and see if there is still a problem. Then restart

Many thanks Fred for your reply. Unfortunately the change had no effect.

Yes I am posting from the problem computer.

The problem (live webcams of birds from RSPB sites) persisted in firefox safemode, and is still there after restart. The other laptop running identical software and as far as I can see the same addons in firefox still has no problems!!??

Both machines are running Ubuntu 12.04, Firefox 30 and I have fully updated all software both automatically and then with manual check.

Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated

Cheers Mike Pearson

What kind of streams are that?

Can you post a link if those are safe sites?

"Video format or MIME not supported" usually indicates that Firefox is using the HTML5 media player with the video tag and that no supported MIME type is found.

You will probably see related errors in the Web Console (Firefox/Tools > Web Developer) about loading various available media types.

Thanks for your reply

The steams are of birds from the RSPB weebcams, eg https://www.rspb.org.uk/datewithnature/150761-manchester-peregrines-

But, theproblem has now spread to the other laptop, I am begining to think this is an firefox update to v30 which may hav occured while the first laptop was offline and so restarted with this update whilst the second which now has the problem was running and this morning, on startup, has developed the problem.

Or am I just sceptical about updates??

Many thanks again Mike P

I see this in the Web Console.

HTTP "Content-Type" of "application/vnd.apple.mpegurl" is not supported.
Load of media resource http://hwcdn.net/e5c5a7c5/cds/hls-live/RSPBMP/_definst_/RSPBMP1/RSPBMP1.m3u8 failed.

I can open the m3u8 link in VLC and GNOME MPlayer on Linux although it is not stable and frequently gets terminated after a few seconds.

Codec: H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part 10) (h264) Resolution: 768x576 Frame rate: 5000

You can try if this data URI works for you:

data:text/html,<object%20type="application/x-mplayer2"%20data="http%3A%2F%2Fhwcdn.net%2Fe5c5a7c5%2Fcds%2Fhls-live%2FRSPBMP%2F_definst_%2FRSPBMP1%2FRSPBMP1.m3u8"%20width="100%"%20height="100%"></object>

It works for me with the Flash player after I have allowed mixed content via the shield icon on the location bar.

Cor-el many thanks for these suggestions.

I have been in and out of the sites and have discovered (stumbled on) a solution to the initial problem -- although I do not understand why it works.

The problem now on both laptops appears to only occur on the RSPB sites when I/we log into them along a set of particular clicks, or use a bookmark saved from yesterday. Starting from a differnt RSPB link in google, and loging into the identical webcam site it now works on both computers !!!! ?

However, they do fail to hold the link after rebuffering a couple of times. Not a great problem because relaunching the link restores the stream.

So I have a partial solution, but no real idea why it works.....

Thanks everybody for your time and suggestions

P.S. I'm still curious as to what is actually going on, if anyone has any thoughts.........
