The spell checker constantly switches to a dictionary I don't want as the default dictionary. I have to reset it to English every time I open Firefox.

I'll be typing in an input box online and notice that the spell checker is highlight nearly every word. I right-click and look at "languages" to find that firefox has started using the Dutch dictionary (which I installed because I VERY OCCASIONALLY need it). I reset the language to English. Next time I open Firefox, I will need to repeat this process. I can't find any instructions about setting the preferred dictionary, and it looks to me like firefox is just picking the first one on an alphabetical list.

Hello ds316, please check it in safe mode.

If the problem does not happen in Firefox Safe Mode, it is most likely because of an extension.

then see : Test for faulty extensions

thank you

What is the value of the spellchecker.dictionary pref on the about:config page?

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

If you do not keep changes after a restart or otherwise have problems with preferences, see:
