Autofill remebers the sign-on information -- how to disable this?

more options

I don't know what it is called, autocomplete or autofill? Anyway, every time when I type in log-on box of ANY forum, email account, any account, firefox remembers the sign-on information and autofill it. I don't want this function. I only want the autofill to work in location bar on the top, which it works. But it is autofilling every and any sign-on box. Really bad. And no, it does not autofill password, which is good. I don't want autofill for password, either. Is there a way to ask Firefox to just autofill search box on the top but nothing else? I am running on windows 7 and firefox 29.0. Thanks.

In case I wasn't clear, here's a screen shot of my Options dialog, Privacy panel with the settings I use. (Firefox 33.1.1)

This will show you how to turn it off or on:Control whether Firefox automatically fills in forms

However in order to remove an entry that is already stored, clearing the cach is usually how to remove this.

As long as form fill is enabled, usually if you select the unwanted suggestion using the down arrow key on the keyboard, you can delete it using the Delete key.

To flush all form fill history, you can use the "Clear Recent History" dialog and uncheck the categories other than "Form & Search History". If you want to retain your search history, then you could use this extension for more selective deleting: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/form-history-control/

If the Password Manager is disabled, but saving form data is enabled then Firefox will store the user name as from data if that feature is enabled. To avoid the latter you would have to enable the Password Manager and decline to store the password.

  • Tools > Options > Security: Passwords: "Remember passwords for sites"

Note that Firefox won't store form data if the input field has an autocomplete=off attribute, so you could look for a Greasemonkey script that sets the autocomplete=off attribute to login forms and input fields that you do not want to remember.

Use these steps to remove saved (form) data from a drop-down list:

  1. click the (empty) input field on the web page to open the drop-down list
  2. highlight an entry in the drop-down list with the mouse or cursor Down key
do not click the mouse or press the Enter key
  3. press the Delete key (on Mac: Shift+Delete) to delete the highlighted entry

I tried all these already. All failed. And I don't need to change the password setting since it is working just fine. I don't want it to remember password and it is doing exactly that. Yes, I can delete history, suggestion etc. Firefox just remembers it again the next time when I log on whatever site/account. I even tried "about:config" in the location bar, browser.urlbar.autoFill, and set it to "false." Didn't work. I changed a few setting there about "signon." Didn't work. I am out of ideas.

Hi firefox001, URL bar autofill relates to the address bar, not to forms in web pages. Signons refer to logins.

In order to stop Firefox from remembering form entries you need to go into the Options dialog, Privacy panel, select "Firefox will: Use custom settings for history" and uncheck the box for "Remember search and form history". (That's from the article linked in the first reply.)

No, please read my previous posts carefully. I am looking for a way for Firefox not to remember my login information.

It seems that a lot of people don't understand my posts so I will try to make it as simple as possible.

what firefox is doing: 1) remember login information (user's name/email address). 2) remember location bar (on the top) information. 3) not remember password.

What I want: 1) firefox remember location bar information. So don't change this part because firefox is already doing it. 2) firefox not remember user's name/email address when I log in whatever website/account. 3) not remember password. So don't change this part because firefox is already doing it.

I have tired everything you guys suggested here and all failed.

Hi firefox001, yes I suggested to uncheck the box to turn off this feature. Are you saying that doesn't work?

When you return to the dialog, is it turned back on again as though you never turned it off?

I apologize to all people in this thread because it works with changing the setting in “remember search form and history.” I thought “form” includes sign on box. I was frustrated. You guys’ suggestions work. Sorry and thanks.

Thanks for posting back, and I'm glad it's solved. It just points out how hard it is to keep the options coherent when they overlap this way.
