windows 8 doesn't work anymore, but i can still copy and paste thunderbird to my vista account. however, it had no memory of any of my accounts. more importantly, there were no emails in thunderbird. could i have deleted them all without knowing it?

To see Thunderbird Profile folders you need to see hidden files and folders. The AppData folder is folder is a hidden folder; to show hidden folders, open a Windows Explorer window and choose "Organize → Folder and Search Options → Folder Options → View (tab) → Show hidden files and folders".

Profile is located here:

  • C:\Users\Windows user name\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\Profile name\

How to transfer profile:

Pop mail accounts and Local Folders account are stored in the 'Mail' folder. Emails are stored in mbox files. They do not have any extension. So, Inbox will be 'Inbox' file. the Inbox.msf is just an indexing file, it does not contain emails.

IMAP mail accounts are stored in 'ImapMail' folder. If you use an Imap mail account those emails are stored on the server, so creating another Imap mail account would get your emails back.
