I've tried everything I could find on the Mozilla support pages to remove "General Crawler 2.6" from the "Extensions" subgroup of "Add-ons." Nothing seems to work. What's the trick?

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Seek also in about:config if you have something related to Crawler and delete it.

If you do the above and firefox not working correct, go for a firefox refresh.

Hello Stan_Schultz, seek also in your Windows 8.1 programs and delete anything related to General Crawler, go from swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search (If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and then click Search.) > Enter control panel in the search box > tap or click Control Panel > View by: select Large Icons > tap or click Programs and features > tap or click the program, > tap or click Uninstall.

Thanks for your suggestion.

Been there. Done that. Even before your response. But, I tried it again just to be sure.

I used the search function and found nothing with "generalworld," "general," or "crawler" in their name. I used Windows Explorer and found no relevant files with "generalworld," "general," or "crawler" in their name. I searched through Windows' Services and found nothing. There's nothing like it is listed in the Programs and Features section of Control Panel. I used Regedit to look for "generalworld," "general," or "crawler" in the registry and found nothing. Neither Task Manager nor Resource Monitor acknowledge its existence (probably because it's somehow been disabled). No joy.

Using several utilities, I tried to see if it was listed anywhere as a startup entry. No luck.

In trying to track down the culprit I happened upon the URL of General-Files.org. When I tried to visit it, I got a "Reported Attack Page" warning.

So, we're back to the original question, "How do I remove it?" I don't want it merely disabled. I want it *GONE*.

But, many thanks again. I appreciate you trying.

Thank you for your suggestions. I downloaded and used ADW_Cleaner and it worked just fine.
