A website i was using to inquire about web-hosting managed to open another tab on my browser with an add page for their website. this tab refuses to close. if i close all tabs on that window until the spam one is the only one left, then im stuck with firefox open because there is still no way to close it. and no i havent restarted my computer because i have things to get done and should be able to fix this without shutting anything down. but im not smart, so someone tell me what to do ;) thanks!

Do you see any alert messages when you try to close the tab? Did you try to go to another tab and middle-click that tab to close the tab or possibly use "Close Other Tabs" in the tab bar context menu?

You can try to set the dom.disable_beforeunload pref to true on the about:config page. You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer. Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.
