messages sent to me contain the first letters of my email, but are not actually sent to my email
people are sending me spam mail to an address that begins with the first 2 letters of my email, e.g. winner@iinet.net.au instead of e.g. william@iinet.net.au. The annoying thing is that these messages are received by Mozilla Thunderbird. How to change settings to ignore emails of this sort?

If you really get the wrong mails, talk to iinet.net.au That should NEVER be allowed to happened. But spam is sent to a list of people were e.g.winner might be the first. View source and see if your mail-address is in there some were. If not make hell with iinet. You could be reading something confidential.
Teach Tbird by marking it as spam. If you have adaptive junk file learning on Tools/ Options / security /junk
Not posting your email in a public forum for spammers to use would be a good start.
