Why don't e-mails disappear when I Delete or Junk them?

When I've read an e-mail I don't want to keep I press the Delete button or the Junk button, a symbol appears by the e-mail but usually nothing else happens - but then sometimes they disappear!

I suspect this is an IMAP-connected account and you are marking the message for later deletion.
