When changing from POP to IMAP, can existing downloaded pop emails be merged/synced with the original online Gmail emails?

I have been downloading my emails via POP since 2006 but would now like to switch to IMAP. Is there a way that the downloaded POP emails can be matched to the corresponding original emails in Gmail so that I don't have to download almost 10 years worth of emails via IMAP? Thank you!
