When tab is opened from a link or from within another tab, why won't it close when executed to do so in Firefox 38.0.5?

Operating System: Windows 7. Scenario: In Microsoft Outlook Web App, I click on an email. Email opens up in a new tab (which is how I like it to). But when I try to "x" out of the tab it won't. This never happened in the previous Firefox versions. This only began to happen when I updated Firefox from version 35 to the latest 38.0.5. HELP. How can I remedy this situation. Any help is most appreciated. Thanks.

To see whether this is a problem with the "x" button vs. a problem with the close tab command, could you try closing tabs using these methods to see whether either of them works:

  • Ctrl+w (closes current tab)
  • right-click the tab > Close Tab

Also, could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).
