I am running Windows XP My email program is Thunderbird 31.7.0 I use Mozilla Firefox for my browser and it is set as the default

However any links in an email , when clicked on, open Internet Explorer !

I still have Internet Explorer on my computer Version 8.0.6001.18202 but I can't update it and don't want to

Why is Thunderbird still opening the links in that browser ?

Links open to the default system browser. Re set it in Firefox and see if that helps. Use Firefox, not the control panel.
