This is what I do in win7 (here is a link to start it in win8) Create a scheduled start of Thunderbird in win task-scheduler

  • At login
  • start Thunderbird
  • If there is a net-connection
  • Allow it to be run manually
  • If it fails try 3 times every second minute.
  • If its running don't start a new instance
  • Force it to stop if it doesn't stop on demand
