Why doesn't Alt+ work for French accents in Thunderbird? I have a number pad.

I have always used Alt+ for accents in French. My new keyboard has a number pad, although it doesn't have a 'number lock' key. Alt+ works in Microsoft Word so it can't be the keyboard. I don't want to use abcTajpu because it's too much trouble.

Merci beaucoup. This assists, to the extent that Gnospen and I have the same version of TB 38.2. So it does eliminate a source of the problem. Are there any other ideas as to why Alt+ might not work for me? Thanks
