After viewing bbc player options attempted to download numerous programmes. Received error message each time. Tried reverting back to firefox 37 and then shockwave 17,no difference. Error: "Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because one of the following protocols (bbc-ipd) isn't associated with any program or is not allowed in this context." Searching suggested changing in firefox " about:config ", "network.protocol-handler.external.javascript" from true to false. This also gave the error.

You need to leave network.protocol-handler.external.javascript set to the default value (false). Otherwise you likely run into problems. On Windows you need to have installed an application (program) that supports a protocol and adds the correct registry key, so Firefox know what to do.
