It is only the Microsoft 'MAIL' app that is not compatible with POP mail. If you install Thunderbird, you will be able to access both POP and IMAP mail servers.

I downloaded Thunderbird and am able to receive emails but cannot send. The only outgoing mail server option is SMTP I have pop mail server

That's right. POP and IMAP get your email, SMTP sends it. Occasionally both servers are hosted by a machine called "mail" so you don't get to see individual separate names.
