Hi recently firefox has stopped showing tooltips on tabs. As I usually have a large number of tabs open at any one time it is really annoying, as I do not know what each of the tabs contains unless I click on it, whereas before all I had to do was hover with the mouse. Now when I hover over with mouse firefox just says: "Current profile:" and then the name of my current firefox profile. It does this on all tabs. Other than that everything else is normal. Any ideas what is going on?? Many thanks!

Chosen solution

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

You can check the browser.chrome.* prefs on the about:config page to see if any sow bold (user set). You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

Hi cor-el, many thanks for the reply. I actually figured out that it was an extension causing the problem this morning. It is the "Profile Switcher" extension which has an option to add the current profile name to the title bar (so you know which profile you are currently in). Up till now it has worked happily with tab tooltips (it hasn't interfered with firefox showing the correct tooltip, i.e. the page title). However strangely within the last few days (before I upgraded to FF 43) firefox was reporting the profile name when hovering over tabs instead of the tab title. Many thanks again for the help.
