Love Mozilla, but my firefox homepage is hijacked by Safe-Web,Upper-search, Global-search, how to remove?

more options

I've tried a few times to get rid of this= Safe-Web,Upper-search,Global-search, which has overtaken my beloved Firefox homepage. I also use Thunderbird as my email service. I'm running Windows 8. None of the Safe,Upper or global names appear in my Installed programs list. I've tried the "reveal" feature & still cant see it. When i zap it with Malwarebytes, it disappears, but returns when i have to restart the computer. Also refresing the Firefox homepage has same result. Help? I have 3 teenage kids who no doubt inadvertantly downloaded this nuisance.

Hi SaltyDaz, an add-on might still be embedded in IE. You could check this article: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/internet-explorer/manage-add-ons

Malwarebytes is good, but you may need to do a little manual digging.

(1) Open the Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a Program. After the list loads, click the "Installed on" column heading to group the infections, I mean, additions, by date. This can help surface undisclosed bundle items that snuck in with some software you (or your kids) agreed to install. Take out as much trash as possible here.

(2) Open Firefox's Add-ons page using either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
  • in the Windows "Run" dialog, type or paste
    firefox.exe "about:addons"

In the left column, click Plugins. Set nonessential and unrecognized plugins to "Never Activate".

In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable (or Remove, if possible) unrecognized and unwanted extensions. Bear in mind that none of these came with Firefox, they are all optional.

Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

Any improvement?

(3) Check for an optional settings file named user.js file in your profile folder (personal settings folder). Firefox uses the settings in that file at startup to override your saved preferences from the previous session. Here's how to check:

Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table on the page, click the "Show Folder" button. This should launch a new window listing various files and folders in Windows Explorer.

Scroll down and look for user.js

If you find a file named user (of type JScript) but not user.js, Windows may be hiding file extensions from you. To work with files as accurately as possible, I suggest unhiding them. This Microsoft support article has the steps: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/wi.../show-hide-file-name-extensions.

If the Home button works normally but problems persist with the desktop/taskbar shortcut, check for a hijacked shortcut. Here's how:

  • Desktop shortcut: right-click the icon, choose Properties
  • Pinned taskbar icon: right-click the icon, right-click Mozilla Firefox, choose Properties

Windows normally will select the Shortcut tab. If not, go ahead and click the Shortcut tab.

The Target line should not have anything after this part:

  • 64-bit Windows, standard 32-bit Firefox: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"
  • 64-bit Windows, test 64-bit Firefox: "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"
  • 32-bit Windows: "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"

If any URLs are listed after that, clear them out and save your change. To test, you can either:

  • Desktop shortcut: double-click the icon to launch a new window
  • Pinned taskbar icon: right-click the icon, click Mozilla Firefox to launch a new window

If you only get your home page, it worked. You probably need to do the same for your other browsers.

If problems still continue: I'll have more suggestions, but those are the typical things.

Hello Jefferson. Thanks for your time & wise suggestions. Your first recommendation did the trick. Damn thing still exists on I.E. so i figure i'll uninstall it & maybe use Chrome for everyone else in the home. Im the only one using Firefox. Again, my thanks, or as we say here in New Zealand "Cheers mate" Darryl
