I changed a few Firefox preference settings and now Firefox won't open, cursor keeps spinning and the force quit window indicates Firefox (is not responding)... How do I fix this and reset back to default? How can I get Firefox to open? HELP!!!

Type about:preferences#advanced<Enter> in the address bar.

Under Advanced, Select Network. Look for Configure How Firefox Connects and press the Settings button. If you are using a proxy, make sure those settings are correct. If there is no proxy, first use No Proxy. If there is a problem, then try System Proxy.

Some problems occurs when your Internet security program was set to trust the previous version of Firefox, but no longer recognizes your updated version as trusted. Now how to fix the problem: To allow Firefox to connect to the Internet again;

  • Make sure your Internet security software is up-to-date (i.e. you are running the latest version).
  • Remove Firefox from your program's list of trusted or recognized programs. For detailed instructions, see

Configure firewalls so that Firefox can access the Internet. {web link}

But I can't get to the address bar because the cursor is a spinning wheel. When Firefox opens, it's a blank page that shows a 'New Tab', blank page and spinning cursor. I can't do anything but go to the apple icon and force quit Firefox because it is not responding.

I need to go somewhere to reset back to default so whatever privacy changes I made revert back.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac=Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

Sorry, I'm not on my computer, just trying to figure out how to get Firefox back to opening when I click on the icon. I'll have to wait til I get home from work. Thanks.

Do you remember what settings you have changed?

On Mac the Firefox profile folder can be found here:

  • ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/<profile>/

On Mac ~/Library is a hidden folder.

You can delete the prefs.js file to reset all preferences.
