Since the last 8-12 weeks Firefox Mac wants to connect to the servers "aus5.mozilla.org" and "shavar.services.mozilla.com" shortly after each launch. What are the purposes/benefits of these server connections?

One of them is probably checking for updates but I'd like to know more.

I have not noticed any difference whether or not I allow the connections.

aus5.mozilla.org is for checking for updates as you can see by the update pref app.update.url on the about:config page. shavar.services.mozilla.com seems to be related the safe browsing as you can see if you search the about:config page for this domain.
