In Thunderbird 38.5 I cannot create a new message, reply, or forward. How do I do these things?

I am using Tbird 38.5 on Windows 10. I am opening messages in a new tab. I cannot create a new message. I cannot forward a message. I cannot reply to a message. If I close the program by clicking the X in the upper right hand corner, I must restart Win 10 to open Tbird again. I did find the EXIT button in the menu, and that does work.

How do I make the other functions work?

Thanks, Redtree1

What stops you doing these things?

Can you see the relevant buttons? Or menus?

Or are all the buttons in sight but not responding when clicked?

Try Thunderbird in Safe Mode to check if you have any addons causing trouble. Lightning is a prime suspect.

Thanks - you got me on the right track. Having never heard of safe mode in Thunderbird, I looked it up. When I started Tbird in safe mode, the first thing I saw was an opportunity to end all addons and set all tools back to defaults. That did it.

Thanks again, Redtree1

I thought I was having this problem, but it turned out that the message windows were opening on my second monitor, which was turned off at the time.
