Open a saved draft in Thunderbird and the content shows for 1 second, then disappears.

On my wife's MBP she has Thunderbird 38.5.1 with Lion. When she opens a saved draft of an email she sees the content for a split second and then it disappears leaving only her signature. It doesn't seem to matter if she inserts a subject line or not, nor does it matter if she inserts a recipient or not. Also the length of the text seems not to matter as I tried it with just a single word and it was lost. I have Thunderbird 38.5.1 on Yosemite on my MBP and it works fine.

Can I now delete the "old" drafts files?

You could. but I would appreciate it if you could actually email them to me.I am guessing that the index was corrupt and a simple repair would have got us where we are now, but having the actual drafts file that I assume also contains the email that caused he crash might make the developers life easier.

I don't have an answer as such, just a load of question. I think your issue is related to the Thunderbird crash you had on the 27th. This crash reason has been around fr quite some time in Bug 834487 But the developers can find no steps to reproduce.

I am reluctant at this point to try to much that may actually fix the issue for you as in that the process I might destroy the forensic information needed to fix the issue once and for all., I think I will seek guidance for the QA folks and see what they would like done.

Thanks very much Matt. My wife and I leave for Spain Feb 8th and won't return until March 22nd. So there won't be a big rush for this, but she would really like it to be resolved. Every so often I hear the dreaded "Damn!" from her and I know exactly what it is. I really appreciate all your help. Howard

In the meantime, could you supply the following information.

  • Is the message composed in HTML or plain Text? (No formatting bar is the give way for plain text. No bold or italic)
  • Do you use an English dictionary or another language.
  • Previous reporters have indicated the presence of accented characters set the issue off. Was this your experience?

I noticed the comment in the crash report that it occurred while spell checking so I think I am on the right track.

  • Right click the drafts folder and select properties. What is the folder size on disk?

- Not sure I understand about the formatting bar so I'm attaching a screenshot of a new email window. - She uses English/United States dictionary - no, no accented characters. - With no items in the Drafts folder it says 1.8 MB I just noticed the Repair Folder button - never seen it before. Shall I take a chance and click it?

That is exactly what I do not want you to do just yet.

Now what I know about macs can probably be written on a pin head with a thumbnail dipped in tar. So when I go wrong tell me.

It may prove useful to be able to examine the file after the event on this occasion. So please dig around in the Thunderbird's profile folder. In the troubleshooting information there is a show profile button. Use it to open the actual profile. Close Thunderbird open the mail folder then the pop.golden.net

is the drafts file 1.8mb? If not goto the local folders folder and try again

once you locate the correct drafts file, rename both. the drafts and drafts.msf to something else. say old drafts now make a second copy of the drafts file, without the MSF and call it say old draft 2. Restart Thunderbird.

Now when Thunderbird starts there will be a new drafts folder created because the old one is missing and the old one should show up as a normal folder. The Old drafts 2 folder will be a "repaired" version of old drafts, so you get your repair along the way. Is there a difference in the two old drafts in Thunderbird? Did re building the index (repair) by having no MSF actually change anything.

I would hope that that fixes the issue for the new drafts completely. My guess is the crash left it corrupt in some way. But as we have deleted nothing yet nothing is lost.

Looks like Thunderbird outsmarted you. It simply used the copies instead of creating a new Drafts file. That is, when I restarted TB instead of seeing a Drafts folder, I see 2 folders; 1 called "Old-Drafts" and another called "Old-Drafts Copy", Checking the sizes I see the following: Old-drafts = 1.9 MB Old-drafts Copy = 1.9 MB Old drafts copy.msf = 1KB Old-drafts.msf = 5KB Perhaps if I moved these files into another folder it would create a new Drafts file?

more options

Okay. I did one more step which was to start a new email. I wrote some stuff and saved it as a draft. THEN it created a new Drafts folder and now when I open it, all my text is there. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Can I now delete the "old" drafts files?

I've sent them off to Unicorn.consulting. I hope that's okay. Let me know when you get them and I'll delete these files from my wife's computer. Again, thank you very much for your insight and expertise, I really appreciate all the help you've given me. And as we all know, "A happy wife is a happy life!"

I do make the address public for just that reason, and if still gets almost no SPAM. Good thing you posted though as good old Google decided your mail was spam.
