site login file dissapeared in upgrade to Ver44.0
Upgrading Firefox to ver 44.0 has resulted in all the site login details, and associated passwords vanishing. Sometime during the upgrade process the box "Remember logins for sites" has become unchecked. Any suggestions to retrieving this information.

You could have been affected by this bug:
- bug 1242176 - All passwords deleted upon startup if privacy.clearOnShutdown.passwords = True but privacy.sanitize.sanitizeOnShutdown = false
Please do not comment in bug reports

Note that privacy.clearOnShutdown.passwords is no longer supported in current releases (Bug 1102184) because of issues with Sync, so you normally wouldn't have this pref as user set.
You would need a backup copy of logins.json and possibly key3.db (encryption key) to recover.
You can check in Windows File Explorer if there is a previous version of the file available.
- Right-click: Properties > Previous Versions
In the event that the passwords information is lost, you should record all information in a separate text file somewhere else on your hard drive, or written down. You can easily copy and paste if you need to do so. If you are concerned about someone else looking at that file, you can compress it using a password.
These can't get your data back, but will help in the future.
These add-ons can be a great help by backing up and restoring Firefox
FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) {web link} FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions, history, passwords, and more. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild your saved files individually into installable .xpi files. It will also make backups of files that you choose.
