I'm using Thunderbird 38.6.0. with Win7. When I receive an email with attached JPG's, they do not display in the body of the email. Instead I get a blank square with a "squiggly" thing in the upper left of the square. Why won't they display in the body of the email? I attached a screenshot of what I see. This email has 26 images attache to it. They are all just square boxes. I can open the attachments with another program, but why can't I seen them in the email itself?

I'd like to add the fact that I have 3 add-ons. Lightning 4.0.7, QuoteandComposeManager 0.4.0.2, and Theme Font & Size Changer 44.6. I know sometimes these things can affect behavior. Disabling them did not make any difference.

Thanks for the link. I'm trying to follow things, but in the third line it says "You can enable remote images for an email address by clicking on "Click here to always load remote images from ...". I don't see anything like that, and it doesn't tell me where to look for it. Does anyone know where this is? I've tried everything else. Line 2 makes some difference in that the images will be at the end of the email, but the main body of the email still has all the empty boxes. There is some mention of proxy settings, mine is set to 'use system proxy settings'. Is that correct? I tried "auto detect proxy settings for this network" but no difference.

The images have been attached, hence the '26 attachments' written below email. Using this option will display those attachments one after the other at end of email. 'View' > select 'Display Attachments Inline'

If these images had remote content then they would have been disabled by default to safe guard your privacy. In these cases you would have seen a message below the headers with options on what to do. Your image does not show this message. If the email was in 'Junk' then the message would not appear until the email was selected as not junk and moved to Inbox, but I notice the selected email is already in the Inbox. However, the images would not have been added as attachments; as in your case.

This leads me to suspect that something may be incorrect in the email headers - abnormal "content-type" headers which is making originally embedded images in the email - (not attachments) to be added as attachments.

Thanks but here should be more as the HTML follows the Plain Text. then the section on images and attachments will follow that.

It is very possible that your Anti-Virus scanner is messing this up. What anti-virus product are you using? Are you scanning incoming mail?

Thunderbird by default will not display remote content. Attachments opened by appropriate software should get scanned. Suggest you stop scanning incoming mail to see if the anti-virus at your end is causing this issue.

Yes, there is a lot more after that, so much so, that if I printed the whole thing, it would be over 500 pages. How much of it do you want? I did save it as an Inbox file, but I don't see any way of uploading it here. I do NOT have AVG scan my emails, since Earthlink seems to do a good job before it even reaches me. Since I have checked "Display attachments inline" the images appear at the end of the email, but the main body of the email still has all the empty squares.

X-ELNK headers are obviously put there by EarthLink. they are using Dmarc which is helpful in detecting spam/spoof mail. you have dkim="fail" and dmarc="reject";

It is possible that they have applied some kind of filter to remove/block the images when downloaded and instead add them as attachments. This means you have the opportunity to view them using appropriate software which usually invokes an Anti-virus program to scan the images.

Selecting "Display attachments inline" would then display those images at the end of the email. However, its a security risk since you've lost the ability to avoid opening a potential malicious attachment. Usually when you choose to open an attachment using appropriate software, the Anti-Virus product you use would then scan the attachment.
