How can I suppress the Thunderbird splash banner at startup?

I've seen the splash every time I access thunderbird---I'm tired of it and it takes up a lot of screen space. I want it to go away.

Chosen solution

Go to Options-General and uncheck the box to show the Thunderbird Start Page.
