Only my inbox updates but not my other folders when TB updates my messages

When I click on "Get Messages" for any of my email accounts, the inbox gets updated properly, but none of my other folders (like Sent, Junk, or Deleted) get updated until I click on each of them separately. Then when I click on the specific folder (like the Junk folder, for example), the status bar shows that TB is sending the login information and opening and updating that folder. Shouldn't all these folders get updated at the same time, presumably when I click on Get Messages, or whenever TB checks for new messages?

I have several email accounts in TB and they all have the same problem. I've tried to check all my settings but can't find anything that looks wrong (but I'm clearly not a techie). I'm using IMAP if that matters. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks Matt -- I didn't know you could do that to troubleshoot problems. After trying that, I also found that if you click on each folder separately and go into the properties for each folder, under General Information, one of the choices is "When getting new messages for this account, always check this folder". I hadn't seen that before, and had assumed that the properties for the account applied to all the account folders. So I've checked those boxes and will see if that fixes the problem. So far it seems to. Thanks very much for the help.

To diagnose problems with Thunderbird, try the following: Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.
