Why does the question mark key start producing another character instead? I have to reboot my computer to clear this fault.

When composing e-mails, eventually the question mark key starts producing a strange italic E symbol. Also quotation marks and apostrophe's become italic. I'm thinking perhaps it happens after I accidentally press some other key by mistake, but can't be sure.

No, I don't think that's what's happening. The wrong character is always the same - a capital E with an accent over it.
