What old version did you try?
Background
Yahoo changed its toolbar last week:
On August 1, 2016 we will simplify the Firefox Yahoo Toolbar and upgrade your browser to the New Tab by Yahoo extension experience. This extension provides a static version of Yahoo Toolbar and customizes your new tab page with Flickr photos and quick access to your top sites. Please note, you will no longer be able to modify your toolbar layout.

Unofficial Roll Back Procedure
Here's how I suggest going about it:
(1) Remove the new toolbar on the Add-ons page. Either:
- Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
- "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Extensions. Then on the right side find and remove the Yahoo extensions. These may include:
- Yahoo! Toolbar and New Tab 5.0.2 -- version numbers visible when you click the More link below the extension's title
- Search and New Tab by Yahoo 1.0.6
Often a link will appear above at least one disabled/removed extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
(2) Install version 3.2.18.20160725095733 -- the July 26th version -- of the toolbar from the following page:
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/yahoo-toolbar-and-new-tab/versions/ -- it's currently the second one down
Before restarting Firefox, go back to the Add-ons page, click the More link under the Yahoo Toolbar extension, and turn off automatic updating. (In case you closed the page...)
- Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
- "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Extensions. Find Yahoo toolbar on the right side and click the tiny More link under the title, then on that page, find the row for Automatic Updates and set it to Off.
Then you can use the restart link for the toolbar to complete the installation.
Does the old toolbar work after that?

Does the old toolbar work after that?
sadly, no that didn't work. i tried it already. it came back as 'unavailable' and to try the new version. i have double checked my work... (and i actually understood and accomplished what you were telling me to do!) i'll try again, just in case. is there an instruction page for new yahoo just in case? thanks, and i'll let you know if it works again. as it is i've lost a good week trying to figure this out. is yahoo working on this?

Sorry, but what is unavailable, at what point do you see that message?

I'm not sure what instructions you're looking for. The new toolbar cannot be customized. The new tab page is forced on you. The only place to access your Yahoo bookmarks with the new bar is your My Yahoo page.
yeah! i finally got back my old toolbar, thank you! jsher. there is now (aug 12 '16) a message saying there is some kind of update for the new one. i did that first, but nothing changed. sorry it took me so long to get back to you, but thank you VERY MUCH. i have lost a good week of time working with this thing. is there any follow up to this/ do i need to be looking for any other change or update? i used the instructions you set forth in your first reply.
Hi rkitty1, you won't be able to update the Yahoo toolbar past the July 26th version if you want to keep the customizable version. I don't know how long it will keep working, but hopefully for quite a while.
dang it, jscher. yahoo went in a changed me back to that new toolbar version, even though i have updates turned off. so i'm back where i started, with now THREE purina.com dots on my toolbar. i didn't want even one! and i don't know how to change them... it appears the only thing one can do is delete them. you up for more assistance?! thanks! -rkitty1 this happened this AM, sunday aug 14 '16
The new toolbar isn't supposed to be editable, so I think you have to roll it back again, or give up on having it. What's the feature you use most on the Yahoo toolbar?
