Why don't threads sort by latest message?

When a folder is set to sort by thread, the latest message in the thread does not appear in the list of messages. That is, if someone just sent me a message that is part of a thread, the only way to see the new message is to find an older message containing the thread and see if there is a new message listed there. This makes no sense.

2 questions: 1. Is this really the way threading is supposed to work? If not, how should it be configured to work in a rational way?

2. Sort by thread appears to be the default setting. Is there any way to change the default so I don't have to change the setting for every folder?

1. Yes that is how threading works. If you want the gmail conversations type of threading then use this add-on. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/gmail-conversation-view/?src=ss

2. Alt+V then select sortby from the menu. Select unthreaded
