Why is a whole new window opening when I click a link? It used to just open a new tab. Now every link I click opens an entirely new window.

Up until a few days ago when I clicked a link in a website a new tab would open and take me to that link. Now when I click a link an entirely new window opens and takes me to the link. If I click 10 links FF will open 10 windows. I don't like this at all. I checked my preferences on my Mac and that's not the problem. The Preferences link on FF only works sometimes. Not sure if that's a problem with my computer or the FF site.

Type about:preferences#general<enter> in the address bar. Under Tabs, mark Open new windows in a new tab instead.

Note: Some software, like Advanced SystemCare with Surfing Protection, can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes. If you have such software then check the settings or uninstall this software.

I was hoping this would work but it didn't. I tried it and it opens a new blank tab and still opens a new window that goes to the link I originally clicked.
