PDF preview won't work on an embedded link. I refreshed 53.0 so no add ons or extensions. Problem continues.
I tried making the changes in the about:config and under the tools drop down that has been suggested for previous versions of firefox, but none work. This is on a PC running Windows 10, and the built in viewer has been working fine for years (even with the ad plus extension), but I've had the problem in the last few days (after 53.0 installed, but I can't say for sure that it started immediately with the 53.0 update) that firefox won't open an embedded pdf (but if there is a LINK to a pdf with the pdf extension showing on the browser page, then firefox WILL open the pdf.) This problem not occur in Edge and Int Expl browser.

What's the code for embedding the PDF? Or can you link to a page demonstrating the problem?
Is this file send with the correct MIME type (application/pdf)?
Reply to both Jscher2000 and cor-el, thanks for your attention. I don't know the code or the MIME type. If a web page has an address that has the pdf extension as part of the address, it works fine. The problem happens when a web site has a clickable choice of "view" or "download" - when I click I get a blank tab that opens and closes in the blink of an eye, and the pdf document neither opens nor downloads. The reason I can't send you the pages is that the two examples from today are from my logged-in bank account's website (where I am trying to open a monthly statement) and from my logged-in electric supplier's website (where I am trying to open my bill from the previous month). I've been opening these and other similar sites for years without problem. The problem has only come up since I've updated firefox to 53.0. If firefox now has a compatibility problem, I may have to change browsers. Any help would be appreciated.

The opening/closing tab can happen if the link is coded to open in a new window/tab, but Firefox detects that it is a download: it closes the tab and display the Open/Save/Cancel dialog. Something is wrong if you are not getting the download dialog.
Do you use any popup blocking add-ons that might be interrupting the process?
Does it work any better if you right-click the link and use Save Link As?
No add ons, I went to a refresh / clean install of Firefox, so no popup block was in place. I don't want to save the link, I want Firefox to open it (what Firefox apparently calls "PDF Preview", though it's not really a "preview" because the intent is to open the document). So, any clue? thanks.
Just to clarify, a "Firefox Refresh" would clear certain settings files that could be related to this problem. Are you sure you did a Refresh -- not that I'm suggesting it?
Assuming you don't mind leaving the current page for this test, what happens if you drag the link to the address bar and drop it there?
