Recently ugraded, & installed Lightening. Nothing on Tools menu works, Help menu disappeared, messages only show in tabs. Safe mode restart doesn't fix.

I recently upgraded to the most recent Thunderbird version. Then installed Lightening, but didn't have a chance to use, so install may not have been successful. Since then Thunderbird is all messed up, including: - Nothing on Tools menu works, except for Message Filters. - The Help menu totally disappeared, not even accessible via Alt-H. - Highlighting a folder in the folder pane, the corresponding messages do not show in the main pane. Only way to see any messages is to load them into a new tab. NEVER had to do that before. Hate it. - Restarted TBird in safe mode. Still same problems. I can't even update because the Help menu is gone. And do not wish to do a complete reinstall, because I cannot export my existing date to reinstall it, with the Tools menu inoperable. Have used TBird without incident for years. This is terrible. Help!

This won't help with many of your problems, but try tapping F10 or use alt+v to make the traditional menu appear. Then go to View|Toolbars and tick the Menu Bar checkbox. Now you will at least have a familiar menu with its help option.

You shouldn't have to open tabs to see folders and their messages. Something is wrong.
