Getting the message "couldn't load xpcom"?

I'm getting the message in Thunderbird "couldn't load xpcom." The Microsoft site says XPCOM is Firefox, and to un-install and re-install Firefox, which I did. But I'm still getting that message in Thunderbird. I can't access any of my email files, and I want to retain the old inbox, etc., so I don't want to un-install and re-install if I can avoid it. Thank you.

I fixed it by re-installing Thunderbird, and the old inbox, etc., came back.
