Thunderbird is hung when in gmail folders

Thunderbird was working fine yesterday. Today, it won't get from either of my two gmail accounts. It works fine for a third email account. There are no messages though. The blue circle at the tab just keeps spinning. I tried sending a message before I knew that there was a problem, and I did get a message that it couldn't save to my sent folder. I can access these gmail accounts from the web. The spinning circle occurs for any gmail folder, including Drafts and Sent.

Could an automatic update have caused this problem?
